Auburn's organic gardening club hosts its second annual on-campus camping trip

Auburn’s Organic Gardening Club recently hosted their second annual on-campus camping trip at Kreher Forest Ecology Preserve.

The Organic Garden Club is a student-run organization that grows produce at the homestead site in the Kreher Forest Ecology Preserve. Some of the items grown include vegetables, berry bushes and fruit trees. In addition to gardening, the club collects waste from Church of the Highlands Café and Smoothie King to make their own compost.

The camping trip began last year as a safe opportunity for students to spend time in nature. The president of the Organic Garden Club, Jonathon Lilebo, said while each individual was responsible for their own shelter and sleeping gear, the club provides the location and food.

“We have a campfire, cook our own food [some of which is harvested from our garden], have live music, take hikes, play games, tell stories, sleep, then round it all out with a homemade breakfast in the morning,” Lilebo said. “This is a community building event that is centered around reconnecting with the world around us.”

Several students of the Auburn community took advantage of this camping trip, including Madeline Ray, junior in architecture.

“The camping trip allowed a lot of people from different backgrounds to form deeper relationships cooking, playing music, hiking and relaxing,” Ray said. “I really enjoyed all of the conversations we had about gardening, sustainability, and the value of working hard to produce wholesome food.”

Ben Bramlett, senior in architecture, said he appreciated the camping trip and the positive outcomes it brought.

“The event is intended as a time for us all to bond as a club and friends," Bramlett said. "Although not planned, this time has also been used to discuss important topics concerning our generation and has acted as a place for students to share their thoughts and ideas."
