Derrick Brown had a busy weekend, and the accolades have continued on to this week.
On Saturday, Brown graduated with a marketing degree; on Sunday, he won the Lott IMPACT Trophy; and now on Monday, Brown has been named to the AP All-American first team.
The AP All-American teams are voted on by a panel of 15 college football poll voters. Brown was Auburn’s lone representative on both the offensive side and defensive side.
Brown and South Carolina senior Javon Kinlaw were the AP’s selections for first-team defensive tackles. This is not Brown’s first AP honor this season with the senior being named the AP SEC Defensive Player of the Year earlier this month.
Brown is Auburn’s first AP All-American first-team selection since 2017 when offensive lineman Braden Smith was named to it. He is Auburn’s first defensive AP All-American first team selection since Nick Fairley in 2010.
This season, Brown helped Auburn’s defense hold opponents to an average of 18.6 points a game. Brown and the Tigers defense are currently the only team to not allow 2019 Heisman winner Joe Burrow to throw for multiple touchdowns in a game this season.
The senior defensive tackle finished his senior season with 50 total tackles including four sacks. He forced two fumbles this season and returned one of them for 47 yards. His 12.5 tackles for a loss this season was a career high.
Last week, Brown announced in a video on his social media that he would be playing in the Outback Bowl against Minnesota on New Year’s Day. The senior could have skipped playing in the bowl game to focus on getting ready for the NFL draft.
