Auburn’s highest-rated quarterback on roster will reportedly have his chance in a Tiger uniform for the first time this season, as starting quarterback T.J. Finley confirmed that Dematrius Davis is taking second-team reps for Auburn’s upcoming bowl game.

Davis will have to be ready for action, if he’s called upon, as Auburn travels up U.S. Highway 280 for the Birmingham Bowl to face an 11-win Houston team on Tuesday, Dec. 28.

“These bowl practices have been special for him because he's been getting second-team reps…The biggest thing for Dee right now is staying locked in,” Finley said in a media session on Friday.

The 5-foot-10 Texas native was recruited under Gus Malzahn as a 4-star recruit after leading the North Shore Mustangs to back-to-back state championships, and earning the title as the winningest quarterback in Texas high school football history.

Throughout his high school career, Davis racked up over 13,500 yards on the ground and in the air, while losing just three games in a 4-year span (51-3 overall record as a starter).

Davis got to campus in January of this year after enrolling in college early, but has reportedly been working solely with the practice squad up until this point as the third or fourth string quarterback on Auburn’s roster.

Finley was visibly injured in the Tigers’ close loss to the Tide in November, and says he will be close to 100% come game time in a couple of weeks, but the possibly of seeing Davis in a package or two is something that could now be more than just a pipe dream for some.

Davis has shut down rumors of the possibly of him transferring out of the program multiple times now, and stuck with his decision to attend Auburn even after Malzahn, his primary recruiter out of high school, was let go.

Highlights for some of Davis’s play from high school can be found here, and highlights from Auburn’s A-Day game, here.
