Auburn quarterback Dematrius Davis will enter the transfer portal, he announced on Wednesday.
The announcement comes two weeks into spring practice, and less than three weeks before Auburn's annual A-Day game.
The former four-star recruit was the winningest quarterback in Texas high school history, winning 51 games as the quarterback of North Shore High School in Houston.
In his freshman season, Davis did not receive any playing time, instead backing up Bo Nix and T.J. Finley, who combined to play all of Auburn’s minutes at quarterback in 2021.
Davis was expected to be one of a crowded field of contenders to be Auburn’s starting quarterback this season. There are now seemingly four candidates for that position.
Junior T.J. Finley started three games for Auburn last season. Sophomore Zach Calzada started 10 games for Texas A&M last season before transferring to the Plains. Redshirt freshman Robby Ashford, who transferred from Oregon, and true freshman Holden Geriner round out the contenders for Auburn’s starting quarterback position.
As Auburn’s quarterback battle will rage on into the fall, the 5-foot-10-inch, 205 pound Davis will search for another school at which to play. The first game for most schools this season will be on Saturday, Sept. 3.
