Two Auburn offensive linemen have been tabbed as SEC players of the week after the Tigers' home victory over Mississippi State.
Senior offensive lineman Gunner Britton received the SEC Co-Offensive Lineman of the Week award. Alongside Britton, freshman offensive lineman Connor Lew received SEC Freshman of the Week.
“They graded out well,” said head coach Hugh Freeze.
In Auburn's fifth home game of the season, both Britton and Lew were vital in the Tigers' first SEC win of the year.
Britton and Lew aided the Tigers in earning 416 total yards with an average of 5.2 yards per carry against the Bulldogs. Auburn’s offensive line was protected quarterback Payton Thorne effectively, as it gave up zero sacks on the day.
Britton, a transfer from Western Kentucky, received his second SEC award Monday. He was previously awarded with top SEC lineman honors for his performance in week one against UMass.
During his time as a Hilltopper, Britton was essential in Western Kentucky’s 9-5 record in 2022. After he redshirted on the Hill his freshman year, Britton started in all but two games from 2019-22.
Britton has started at left guard for the Tigers in all eight games this season.
Lew, on the other hand, secured his first career start with the Tigers Saturday after taking over at center due to an injury suffered by Avery Jones.
“He did really well. Made most of the calls the right way,” Freeze said. “I thought he played really solid for a freshman.”
The freshman from Kennesaw, Georgia, was rated one of the top 50 Georgia prospects on 247Sports, On3 and ESPN before committing to Auburn.
Britton, Lew and the Tigers are set to take on Vanderbilt this Saturday. Kickoff time is set for 3 p.m. CST, and the game will be televised on SEC Network.
