Auburn wide receiver Jay Fair announced on social media Saturday his plans to enter the transfer portal with two years of eligibility remaining. Fair joins defensive lineman Brenton Williams as the only other Tiger to leave the program during the spring transfer window.
Fair, alongside Ja’Varrius Johnson who entered the portal this past winter, marks two of the top three producing receivers for Auburn last season to depart the program.
The Dallas native brought in 324 yards on 31 receptions during the 2023 campaign.
Fair had a strong start to last season as the leading receiver against UMass, the Tigers’ season opener, with five catches for 56 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown from Payton Thorne.
The sophomore brought in a 13-yard touchdown catch from Thorne, one of two total receptions, in Auburn’s nail-biter at Cal and had a career day with seven catches for 93 yards with a long gain of 36 yards against Samford.
Fair however didn’t make a catch in the Tigers’ final three games of the season and didn’t have more than three receptions in any of Auburn's final ten matchups of the 2023 season.
Over the offseason, Hugh Freeze and his staff brought transfers Robert Lewis and Sam Jackson V to compete with Fair for the slot position. Both worked their way into the first-team offense during spring practices.
Freeze and his staff will continue to monitor the portal for veteran receivers to fill the 2024 roster with high school signees Perry Thompson and Malcolm Simmons still to enroll with the program this summer.
