The Auburn Tigers Cross Country team will be heading to Columbia, Missouri this week to compete in the Gans Creek Classic hosted by the University of Missouri. The Tigers have held steady this year, finishing in the top 5 at each meet and even winning the women's team title at the Foothills Invitational. Auburn competed in the Gans Creek Classic last year, taking gold in the women's six-kilometer race. This year, Auburn is seeking to maintain its momentum with strong early-season finishes and hopes to continue this trend in this meet.
The Gans Creek course was formatted and built out in 2019. Designed for high-level competition, it has been recognized as one of the top venues in the Midwest. This track has hosted events such as the 2021 SEC Championships, the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Midwest Regional Championships, MSHSAA Cross Country Championships, and, of course, the sixth Gans Creek Classic, among others. The park spans 320 acres and features light rolling hills, graded turns, and various other amenities. The nature of the course allows runners to utilize various running strategies to test their endurance and speed.
Auburn's men's team will be led by its strongest runners, Nickson Chebii and Max Hardin. Both athletes have achieved top finishes in their past few races and are projected to do the same this week. Chebii has continued to improve on his 2024 USTFCCCA All-Region honors, while Hardin has been the Tigers' steady second scorer. They provide the Tigers with one of the finest running combinations in the SEC. While these runners will aim to lead Auburn's team against fierce rivals this weekend, Auburn's overall objective will be to close the scoring difference between its top two and the rest of the men's team.
The women’s team has seen great success so far this season. They are coming off a great win in the Foothills Invitational, where their top performers, Cady McPhail and Mac Collins, both had top-five finishes. That finish, combined with steady scoring from Alexandra Walsh, Addison Boyer, and Shelby Balding, demonstrated Auburn's stability and diversity. The women's team followed up with a seventh-place result in the Southern Showcase; therefore, they must form a close group on the somewhat longer six-kilometer circuit at Gans Creek. The team as a whole has been showcasing its training and hard work this season. After their initial performances to start the year, the women’s team will be intriguing to watch and exciting to follow throughout the entire season.
The weather in Columbia, Missouri, this Friday looks promising, with morning temperatures projected in the mid-60s and clear skies, prime racing conditions. Lacking weather uncertainties in Missouri, the race should boil down to strategy, timing, and who can manage the problematic sections of the trail. Good weather, coupled with strong finishes this season, indicates confidence and prime positioning for this week's race, which leads to a good projected finish for Auburn. The Gans Creek Class will be a fun race to watch and will be exciting to see Auburn’s finish this Friday.
