Auburn women’s basketball secured its first win of SEC play Sunday afternoon, taking down the Florida Gators 60–50.
This win comes at a dire time for Auburn, as it helped the Tigers to break a three-game losing streak and bounce back from a rough loss to the No. 2 Texas Longhorns last Thursday.
With three of the Tigers’ next four games coming against top-10 teams in the nation, securing wins against unranked opponents—such as Florida or Auburn’s next matchup against Alabama—is critical if the Tigers hope to play in March for just the second time in the last five seasons.
With the win, Auburn is now an impressive 8–2 in Neville Arena this season, marking its fourth win over the Gators in the past five matchups.
Despite being down four at halftime, the Tigers made impressive second-half adjustments on offense, resulting in them outscoring the Gators by 14 after the break.
The fourth quarter was particularly significant for Auburn, as it scored 22 points while holding Florida to just 11 on 25% shooting from the floor. Auburn put on a defensive clinic for the entirety of the game, forcing the Gators to commit 19 turnovers.
These turnovers proved to be the deciding factor, as Auburn scored 25 points off takeaways compared to Florida’s six. Auburn’s offense also showed impressive playmaking ability Sunday, especially in the second half. The Tigers led the game in assists, totaling 13.
Arguably, the Tigers’ most impressive feat of the night was keeping star Florida guard Liv McGill at bay. Auburn held McGill to 10 points—below her season average—while limiting her to just 30% shooting from the floor and 13% from three.
Kaitlyn Duhon and Harrisoum Coulibaly led the way for the Tigers on offense, combining for 28 points while also forcing five steals on the defensive end. Junior guard Ja’Mia Harris also had an impressive showing, scoring eight points while leading the Tigers in rebounds (9) and assists (4).
Auburn will look to continue its lockdown defense as it takes on rival Alabama Crimson Tide this Thursday in Neville Arena. Similar to Auburn, Alabama is currently 1–2 early in SEC play, and with a chance to return to a .500 in-conference record on the line, it is sure to be a battle come Thursday.
Be sure to catch your Tigers this Thursday at 8:00 p.m. CST as they take on unranked Alabama in a heated rivalry matchup!
