After a night against Texas that Larry Vickers and the Auburn Tigers women’s basketball team will be hoping to forget, the Tigers will look to get back on track against the 12–6 Florida Gators this Sunday.
This will be the Tigers' fourth game of SEC play as they look to break out of their longest losing streak of the season. Offensive struggles as of late have put the Tigers with their backs against the wall this season after an impressive start to the year. They will need to gain momentum in the coming weeks if they have any hope of tournament play.
Auburn’s matchup versus the Longhorns certainly did not go as planned. The Tigers were outscored by ten or more points in every quarter of play and were held under ten points in both the first and third quarters. However, Texas was arguably the Tigers’ toughest matchup of the season, as the Longhorns are currently undefeated and ranked as the second-best team in the nation.
The Tigers will have back-to-back matchups against unranked Florida and Alabama before their toughest stretch of the season, in which they face three top-ten–ranked teams in the span of a single week.
Florida has also had its share of struggles to start SEC play, as the Gators currently sit at 0–3 in conference play after losing to Texas A&M in Gainesville earlier this week.
The Gators have been in the bottom half of the SEC in both offense and defense this season. If there’s any opportunity for Auburn to pick up its first SEC win of the season, Florida appears to be the Tigers' best chance over the next few weeks.
Florida has one offensive weapon who could certainly cause some trouble for the Tigers on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore guard Liv McGill is currently second in the SEC in points per game, averaging just under 24 points per contest this season. McGill has also been a star playmaker for the Gators, averaging 5.6 assists per night, which ranks fifth in the SEC. She has been phenomenal on defense as well, ranking sixth in the conference in steals per game with 3.3 per contest.
Auburn will need to make it a priority to put a stop to McGill if it hopes to emerge victorious on Sunday. If the Tigers can keep the ball out of her hands and force other Gators to create and take shots, Auburn could be in business. Florida currently holds the worst three-point percentage of any team in the SEC at 25 percent on the year. If the Tigers force the Gators to take shots from beyond the perimeter, they could very well walk out of Neville Arena as winners on Sunday afternoon.
Make sure to catch your Tigers this Sunday at 2:00 p.m. CST as they take on the unranked Florida Gators in Neville Arena!
