The Auburn men’s golf team avoided elimination early Monday morning, June 1, at the NCAA Championship in Bradenton, Florida. The Tigers were forced to finish the third round of the tournament on Monday morning after play was suspended Sunday, May 31, because of inclement weather. Freshman Ben Schlottman shot even par for the second consecutive day to lead the Tigers in the last round of stroke play. Half of the 30 teams in the field were cut after three rounds of stroke play at The Concession Golf Club. After the first three rounds, Auburn was tied for 12th, which earned the Tigers a spot in the final round of stroke play. The fourth round will start Monday, when Auburn tees off at 9 am CST on the 10th hole. If the Tigers finish in the top eight teams after the final round of play, they will advance to the match play portion of the tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 2-3.
Auburn began its weekend at the NCAA championship on Thursday, May 29. The Tigers finished their rounds with a cumulative team score of 301.
After 21 seasons as the head women’s golf coach at Auburn, Kim Evans has accepted a new position within the university and has decided to end her Auburn coaching career. Evans led Auburn to eight SEC titles and seven top-10 finishes in 21 seasons.
The No. 7 men’s golf team jumped from seventh to fourth place with a 4-under 280 in the final round of the NCAA Lubbock Regional on Saturday, May 16, to earn their fourth-straight ticket to the NCAA Championship. The Tigers, who were one shot off the cutline after the second round, finished the final two holes 2-under to advance to the NCAA Championship in Bradenton, Florida Friday, May 29, to Wednesday,June 3. “It was a stressful day and kind of up and down,” coach Nick Clinard said.
Junior All-SEC Michael Johnson led the Tigers with a 2-under 69 and is tied for 13th. Sophomores in All-SEC Matt Gilchrest and Ryan Benton are tied for 21st at 1-under 70. Gilchrest fired a 4-under 32 on the back nine while Benton was 3-under on the front nine.
Sophomore Matt Gilchrest was named to the SEC Men’s Golf Community Service Team for his first-team All-SEC standing and his participation in giving back to the Dufner Foundation this season.
No. 4 Auburn men’s golf finished second with a 12-under, 852 at the Gary Koch Invitational in Gastonia, North Carolina, on Tuesday, April 7. Junior Michael Johnson also earned co-medalist honors with an 8-under, 208.

Schlottman also won SEC Freshman of the Year, as well as being named Freshman All-SEC. Schlottman is the first freshman in Auburn history to make the All-SEC first-team, and it is the first time Auburn placed two golfers on the All-SEC first-team in the same season since 2002. At 69.67, Schlottman’s stroke average currently ranks as the lowest single season stroke average in program history, and it is good for third-best in the SEC and first among freshmen. The freshman had four top-five finishes this year, including runner-up finishes at the SEC Championship and the Schenkel Invitational. Gilchrest’s 70.41 stroke average is currently the second-lowest in school history and eighth-best in the SEC. Johnson won the Tiger Invitational presented by Jason Dufner, and finished with co-medalist honors at the Gary Koch Invitational.
