A spirit that is not afraid

Theater graduates dAUnce the night away all weekend

Dancers slid, spun and scurried all over the stage at the Telfair Peet Theatre for dAUnce VII, which ran Thursday, April 23 through Sunday.

Duane Lee Holland, an acclaimed choreographer and professional hip-hop dancer, choreographed a dance for the students to perform and showed off his dance skills in a number titled "Get Up."

"I thought the performance was awesome," said Kelley Holcomb, freshman in music theater. "I specifically liked the modern hip-hop piece."

The production featured a plethora of dance styles.

"The concert highlighted many different aspects of the concert dance world: romantic ballet, rhythm tap, several approaches to modern dance, student choreographic projects mentored by myself, and the guest artist and his fusion of hip hop, African dance and modern dance," said director Adrienne Wilson.

Wilson made an appearance tap-dancing to the music of an acoustic guitar and was joined by a crowd of students who tapped their way on stage in patterned vests to finish off the piece.

Some pieces were more personal, with simple costumes and fewer performers, while other pieces featured dancing that was full of quirky personality.

Brittany Allen, junior in entrepreneurship, and Cornelius Benson, junior with a minor in dance, performed a piece titled "Surrender."

The audience laughed during a piece called "Barbie, Then and Now," which featured five dancers in pink outfits meandering around the stage stiffly with unbendable arms and overly happy expressions on their faces.

During a ballet toward the beginning of the production, 20 delicate feet tip-toed around the stage, and the dancers twirled their white skirts under the spotlights.

To get all the different dance styles down, the students started working in October, and when Holland arrived on April 14, the students in his piece picked up their moves in three days, spending the rest of the time before the opening night to perfect their piece.

"I think it's really cool that they are all from different majors and can come together for this," said Bree Windham, sophomore in music theater.
