Tigers avoid late rally, win Vanderbilt series

Auburn defeated Vanderbilt at Plainsman Park Sunday afternoon in an 11-10 victory.

The game was the last of a three game weekend series between the Tigers and the Commodores.

The win gave the Tigers' their second SEC series victory of the season after losing 12-3 Friday and winning 5-3 Saturday.

It also improved Auburn's record to 18-9, 4-5 SEC, while dropping Vanderbilt's to 17-10, 3-6 SEC.

Both teams went into the Sunday's game with identical 17-9, 3-5 SEC records.

Auburn head baseball coach John Pawlowski, who coached alongside Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin for five seasons at Clemson, said Friday's loss encouraged Auburn to step up their performances in the second and third games.

"You look back at every run that was scored, and when it comes right down to it, in college baseball you are never out of a ballgame, and we needed every run we could get today," Pawlowski said. "After losing Friday, we responded and won a close game yesterday, and what turned out to be a close ballgame today."

Trent Mummey, Kevin Patterson, Brian Fletcher, Justin Hargett and Hunter Morris all hit home runs for Auburn, improving the Tigers' home run season total to 58 for the year.

Morris, a sophomore, hit two doubles in addition to his home run for a 3-for-5 finish at the plate.

"Everyone put good swings on the ball today," Morris said. "We have some strong guys with really good swings, and we have proven that we are going to hit balls out of the yard."

Junior Taylor Thompson (2-1) pitched into the fifth inning, striking out two and allowing four runs on six hits and two walks.

"I felt like I had all of my stuff today," Thompson said. "I was able to spot my fastball, and I had great offensive support behind me. It's always a confidence booster to get a win."

Auburn took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning and improved to 3-0 in the second.

Vanderbilt almost caught up by the fourth inning, raising the score to 3-2. Auburn responded by adding two more runs.

The Commodores again retaliated by scoring three times in the sixth, followed by five more runs for Auburn, bringing the score to 10-5.

The seventh inning was scoreless for both teams, but each scored one run in the eighth.

Vanderbilt rallied in the ninth by scoring four runs but was unable to complete the comeback.

It was Auburn's first series win over Vanderbilt since 2002.
