A spirit that is not afraid

Military Leader Speaks at Auburn

Students and faculty members filled Telfair Peet Theatre Tuesday for a lecture titled "Making the Most of Your Leadership Potential."

The Women's Leadership Institute organized the event as a part of its Extraordinary Women lecture series.

Lt. Gen. Leslie Kenne addressed students and faculty on becoming successful leaders.

"(Kenne) was the first woman to achieve the rank of lieutenant general in the Air Force, one of only three women in U.S. history to achieve the three-star rank and the first female ROTC cadet at Auburn University," said Women's Leadership Institute Director Barbara A. Baker.

Kenne highlighted five basic leadership aspects: integrity, courage, commitment, decisiveness and tenacity.

Kenne stressed the importance of acknowledging the accomplishments of others.

"Taking people's contributions for granted will get you nowhere when you need their loyalty," Kenne said.

Kenne said the best leaders are approachable.

"If people are afraid to talk to you, you become isolated as a leader," Kenne said. "Your title is all the authority you need."

Kenne showed students pictures from her career and time as a leader in the military.

"You've got to understand who you're working with and how they operate, military or civilian," Kenne said.
