A spirit that is not afraid

Your view: Easy energy long gone

Unfortunately, the era of cheap oil from fossil petroleum is over. The "easy oil" has been found, mined and burned. Citizens and policymakers must now increase efforts to change the system and our behavior. For example, we must continue to increase efficiency of vehicles to reduce oil consumption and to address global climate disruption. In addition, roadways should accommodate pedestrians and bicycles as well as cars. Mass transit must be improved and increased.

Changes in the generation of electricity will also create jobs and improve public health. We can do this by employing alternative sources of energy, e.g., thermal and photovoltaic solar panels, wind turbines, geothermal wells.

Regarding climate disruption, burning fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, coal) produces greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, that cause higher temperatures (remember Texas in 2011), water shortages, stronger hurricanes, higher sea levels, and increased acidity of the oceans.

Making the world a better place for our children and grandchildren should be more than a slogan. We must take immediate steps to make it a fact. Parents and others should act by contacting elected officials now.
