Auburn’s women’s tennis beats Tennessee

Auburn’s women’s tennis team defeated Tennessee Friday, March 6, in the Tigers’ first home SEC match of the season.

The team defeated the Lady Volunteers 4-0 en route to their first SEC victory.

Second courts doubles team, sophomore Reka Muller and senior Jen Pfeifler finished first with an 8-5 win.

Juniors Paula De Man and Michala Kucharova won their doubles match despite trailing 7-2. They forced a tiebreak and won it 7-3.

After the match, Kucharova said although they didn’t come out strong, they never lost their confidence.

“We started slow, but I feel like we got the momentum when we won the game at 7-2," Kucharova said. "We never lost belief that we could win the match.”

The Tigers’ eighth ranked doubles pair of senior Emily Flickenger and Junior Pleun Burgmans were winning 6-4 when the de Man and Kucharova clinched the doubles point.

Pfeifler was credited with a win on court six because of a default on Tennessee’s part.

Muller won on court five by a score of 6-2, 6-2, and after the match, coach Lauren Longbotham Meisner said she was happy with Muller’s use of strategy.

“She played really well,” Meisner said. "I think we’ve changed a little bit of her tactics and she’s starting to buy into those tactics.”

The last singles match to finish was won buy freshman Andrae Dikosavljevic by a score of 6-1 7-5.

The Tiger’s next match is scheduled for Sunday, March 8, in Auburn. Auburn will look to even up their SEC record win a win over the sixth ranked Georgia Bulldogs.
