Hollywood of the South: 40th Atlanta Film Festival

Auburn is within easy reach of some of the finest cultural experiences. While food and fine art may come to mind, Atlanta is also well known for its community of film lovers.

This year marks the 40th annual Atlanta Film Festival, which is to be held this weekend and next week, from April 1–10.

Filmmakers all around the world submitted over 4,700 length and short films this year. The chosen showings are sure to be informative, entertaining and diverse.

The film schedule is immense, with an option for everyone. Films showing the first weekend, April 1– 3, include the gripping crime documentary “Missing People” and “A Peculiar Noise,” an exploration of the rock music scene in Athens, Georgia.

Also showing are narratives with compelling sci-fi wilderness adventures such as “A Morning Light,” and family Derby dealing such as “Here Comes Rusty.”

Various interesting showings occur throughout the week, and an evening trip to the Hollywood of the South would definitely be worth it to catch flicks such as “Last of the Elephant Men” on Tuesday or “Speed Sisters” on Thursday.

Take advantage of the final weekend to see two films and enjoy a full day. Classic films are also rescreened throughout the week, with “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” making several appearances, and “Labyrinth” screening on the final Saturday.

Screenings will be at multiple theaters and venues around the city, including the Atlanta’s historic gem the Plaza Theatre, 7 Stages Theatre and the High Museum of Art.

Three ticket options are available. The best option for busy students may be to purchase the Movie Hopper card for $50, which allows second-group access to all the films.

General admission tickets for individual films can be purchased at venue box offices in Atlanta for $10 in advance or $12 same-day.

If you feel compelled to skip school and watch all of the films, additional badges of different levels are available with access to guaranteed seats and experiences and can be purchased online.
