Promising road match ends in defeat for women's tennis

The traction-gaining Auburn women's tennis team took to the road for another weekend against ranked opponents, facing off against No. 61 Missouri and No. 31 Arkansas.

The Tigers defeated Missouri 5-2 on Friday and fell 6-1 to Arkansas on Sunday.

Missouri marked Auburn's seventh-straight matchup against a ranked opponent. Pluen Burgmans and Alizee Micahud defeated Bea Machado Santas and Brianna Lashway to remained 6-0 on the season in doubles. Alannah Griffin and Caroline Turner clinched the doubles point for the Tigers with a 7-5 win on court three.

“I am really proud of how our team conducted themselves today,” said Auburn coach Lauren Spencer. “Missouri tried to put us in situations to unnerve us from playing our best tennis, however we didn't take the bait. We stayed focused and came out with a strong win. I believe this is just another example of how battle tested and mentally tough our team is in hostile situations.”

Auburn gained a 2-0 lead when Griffin notched her 20th singles win of the season, defeating Brittany Lashway 6-3, 6-0. Burgmans had the 180th combined win of her career when taking down Lashway 6-2, 6-4. She is now six wins away from becoming the all-time combined wins leader in program history. 

Michaud clinched the match for the Tigers and improved to 13-0 in the dual-match season with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 victory. 

Riding high, Auburn moved on to Fayetteville where the dropped a difficult road match and fell to a 16-4 record.

Though the doubles point was lost, Michaud and Burgmans improved to 7-0 in doubles for the season with a 6-1 win over Mackenzie Craft and Flavia Araujo, marking Burgmans 100th career win in doubles.

Griffin was the solo winner for Auburn in singles, defeating Craft 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 and advancing to 21-9 on the season. 

The Tigers will return home to face No. 22 Mississippi State at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 24 at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
