Grothe closes Olympic trials in 1500 freestyle

Auburn's Zane Grothe swam in lane two at the men’s 1500-meter freestyle finals on Sunday, closing out the trials in eighth place.

The Auburn record-holder for the 500-, 1,000 and 1650-yard freestyles, Grothe clocked the fifth-fastest time (15:11.72) in the 1500m freestyle Saturday afternoon during prelims at the USA Swimming Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska.

Grothe already swam in the finals of the 400-meter freestyle and finished in fourth place.

Auburn swimming and diving has had eight current and former athletes qualify for the Olympics. Current swimmers to make their country’s Olympic team are Peter Holoda (Hungary), Ziv Kalontarov (Israel) and Luis Martimez (Guatemala). Former swimmers to qualify for the Olympics are George Bovell (Trinidad & Tobago), Fred Bousquet (France), Marcelo Chierighini (Brazil), Kirsty Coventry (Zimbabwe) and Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace (Bahamas).

The 2016 Olympic Games will be held in Rio from Aug. 5-21.
