Bee Auburn, a weeklong celebration of pollinators, is hosting photographers and artists to showcase their skills.
In collaboration with the Auburn Arts Association, the “Pollinators” Photography exhibit will be held June 5 – 21 at the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center.
Anyone 17 years and older can enter, both amateur and professional. The theme of the exhibit is not just limited to bees, but any pollinators and their habitats such as birds, beetles, bats or moths.
“Bee Auburn is an opportunity to not only celebrate but start a conversation about the importance of pollinators,” said Whitney Morris, co-coordinator of Bee Auburn. “They affect everything, our health, history, culture, society, and economy.”
Photographers can submit their work at the Jan Dempsey Community Center between May 22-31. No fee is required but participants are asked to submit one piece per artist, and all works must be matted and not framed.
Both the Auburn University College of Agriculture and Auburn Parks and Recreation are hosting the Bee Auburn event.
Bashira Chowdhury, Bee Auburn’s co-coordinator along with Morris, expressed her passion for pollinators.
“As a pollination ecologist I don’t just save the bees,” said Chowdhury. “My focus is how do we return to changes in land use that are sustainable because if we’re having to save something that is so fundamental to who we are there is something wrong with what we’re doing.”
Bee Auburn is a conversation about us becoming more sustainable said, Chowdhury.
There will be a public reception honoring the photographers and artists June 16, and there will also be opportunities to show and sell artwork at the main Bee Auburn event.
