Auburn among two colleges awarded for over $3 million in Chick-fil-A sales

Tucker Perkenson, licensing consultant for Chick-Fil-A, handed a plaque to the smiling director of the on-campus Chick-fil-A, Oscar Fernandez, as cameras from all angles flashed.

Auburn University is one of two universities to surpass $3 million in sales at the on-campus Chick-fil-A location. Virginia Tech sits just above Auburn at the moment, but Fernandez said he doesn't see that being the case for very long.

Off-campus Chick-fil-A locations are awarded for each million mark they reach, while on-campus locations haven't been in the past. Having two universities surpass $3 million in the same 12-week period called for recognition, Perkenson said.

"Other than Auburn and Virginia Tech, this has never been done before and we wanted to make sure we made a big deal of it," Perkenson said. "We don't necessarily have this award for every time [campuses] hit a million or $2 million, but we wanted a special event because it's never been done before."

Bill Sallustro, district manager for Chartwells, looked at the on-campus Chick-fil-A employees as they posed for a photo with the cow and said they were the reason for the success. Students come back and enjoy eating here because of the people, quality and environment, Sallustro said.

"Students are there to help us hit our target but the team is there to provide the product and service — it goes hand-in-hand," Sallustro said.

Chick-fil-A has a decent approval rate from students, Sallustro said. Once data is collected from customers through surveys, the team confronts the issues that might have been presented head on.

Sallustro said everything that changes with Tiger Dining on campus is driven by the wishes of the students that have spoken up.

"One of the obstacles over throughout the past year has been staffing and I knew if we were completely staffed and had all seven registers opened at lunch then that would be the key," Fernandez said. "I knew that it was just a matter of time before we hit that mark."

According to Sallustro, the majority of campus dining business is done in the span of 32 weeks — when the majority of students are eating and living on campus.

With space, staffing and location, Sallustro said Auburn's Chick-fil-A is doing remarkably well. He attributes the success to the people behind the counter and those working to ensure pleasant dining experiences.
