It hasn’t been an easy path for offensive tackle Austin Troxell during his football career.
He’s undergone three major knee surgeries during high school and college, but going into his junior season Troxell is in a spot to take over a starting tackle position for Auburn.
Jack Driscoll and Prince Tega Wanogho both left for the NFL, leaving both tackle spots open and, while there will be competition, Troxell feels like a clear choice to start at either tackle spot.
Troxell didn’t see any action in 2017 but played in 12 games in 2018 and was looking to be a starter on the 2019 team before his third knee injury.
Now, after sitting out a full season, Troxell is the offensive line X-Factor.
When he arrived at Auburn, Troxell was a 4-star prospect and the No. 18 tackle in the class of 2017 according to 247Sports composite player rankings.
Center Nick Brahms is the only definite starter on an Auburn offensive line that has four holes open.
Brodarius Hamm feels like a shoo-in to start at either tackle or guard, wherever the coaches want him.
This year’s JUCO transfers, Brenden Coffey and Kilian Zierer will undoubtedly push for a starting tackle spot, but it’s hard to imagine both of them passing Troxell on the depth chart.
If quarterback Bo Nix takes the big step forward that many are expecting out of him, he’ll need strong blindside blocking out of Troxell.
