After dropping an electrifying series to No. 2 Texas 2–1 last weekend, the No. 5 Auburn Tigers baseball team is set to take on unranked South Alabama this Tuesday in its lone midweek matchup before facing rival Alabama in a three-game series in Tuscaloosa this weekend. The Tigers will be looking for a bounce-back performance, having lost two games in a row for the first time all season. With a 4–2 start in SEC play, Auburn currently sits tied for first place in the conference while holding the third-best overall winning percentage of any SEC team so far.
Auburn will likely see sophomore Andreas Alvarez take the mound. Coming off a dominant five-inning performance against No. 3 Georgia Tech last Tuesday, in which he struck out ten Yellow Jackets batters while allowing only one run. Alvarez will be hoping to carry that momentum into his next start. Maintaining a 1.09 ERA through his first five starts of the season, Alvarez has emerged as a breakout pitcher for the Tigers and is putting himself in contention to be one of the best midweek starters in the nation.
The Tigers will also be looking to see their offense catch fire again after suffering their first shutout loss of the season to Texas last Sunday. Second baseman Chris Rembert has been regaining his footing again after an ankle injury at the beginning of the season. The sophomore from Pensacola, Florida, has now hit two home runs in his last four games, all against top-five opponents.

South Alabama currently holds a 16–8 record on the season and is coming off a series win against UL Monroe last weekend. Despite suffering some harsh defeats this season, the Jaguars have also notched some impressive underdog victories, including a 6–3 win over Alabama just last Tuesday. Auburn will need to keep its foot on the gas to earn its fifth straight midweek victory.
The Jaguars’ offense has gotten off to a less-than-ideal start, with only three batters hitting .300 or higher through their first 24 games. Auburn will need to be on the lookout for junior infielder Brennon Wright, the team’s hit leader with a .414 batting average, and senior first baseman Blake Guerin, a premier power hitter with eight home runs already this season.
Auburn will need to make it a priority to jump on South Alabama’s pitching early. The Jaguars do not have a starter this season with an ERA under 3.00, which could be a good sign for a Tigers offense that has had several outbursts in recent midweek games.
This midweek game serves as a chance for the Tigers to regain confidence after a roller coaster of a series against Texas. Coming off of a victory could provide a morale boost as Auburn takes on its old rival in Tuscaloosa this upcoming weekend.
