Taking the Auburn Family to another level

Many Auburn students have family ties to the university. However, the Ahmed family is deeply rooted in Auburn; with all four of them attending the university at the same time at one point, according to Nighet Ahmed, graduate student in adult education. Nighet said her family would run into each other on campus sometimes. "We would see each other on campus more than we would see each other at the house," Nighet said. Nighet homeschooled her sons, Azeem and Aleem Ahmed, and said she emphasized writing.

UPDATE: Move-in dates quickly approaching

Fall semester is right around the corner, and with that comes on-campus moving. According to Kelsey Prather, communication and marketing specialist with Auxiliary Services, they will move in approximately 5,000 students over four days.  "[We] try and facilitate the parents, make them feel good about their kids moving in," Prather said.

VCOM students excited to begin classes

A group of first-year students is coming to Auburn, anxiously awaiting their first day of class. However, these are not freshmen; they have in fact already graduated college. These students are the inaugural class of the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, Auburn Campus, and they are set to begin classes Thursday, July 30. According to the VCOM website, doctors with degrees in osteopathic medicine often become primary care physicians in rural areas.

Auburn student lands dream internship with Lilly Pulitzer

Many girls spend summer months covered in Lilly Pulitzer designs, but Courtney Kennedy, junior in public relations will be surrounded by Lilly. Kennedy landed an internship with the company, a "dream come true" for her. "It was always the internship I wanted," Kennedy said. Kennedy is a creative communications intern, and works with social media as part of her duties.

Appel named interim agriculture dean

Arthur Appel, professor of entomology, was named interim dean for the College of Agriculture and director for Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station on Monday, July 6, according to Provost Timothy Boosinger.  Appel succeeded Paul Patterson, who served as acting dean and director for several weeks.

Swimmers compete in Pan Am games in Toronto

Swim team members, Beatriz Travalon, junior in international business minoring in sustainability and Luis Martinez, sophomore in mechanical engineering, qualified to compete in the swimming portion of the Pan American Games in Toronto Tuesday, July 14-Saturday, July 18.

Replacement Magnolia oak transplanted, rolling schedule remains the same

After extensive care trying to save the original Magnolia oak, it was replaced by another live oak Wednesday, July 8.  Ben Burmester, design project lead in Facilities Management for the Toomer's Corner project, said the transplant ran smoothly this morning even with the Corner construction.  Gary Keever, professor of horticulture, said the replacement tree was dug from a nursery in Lake City, Florida 16 months ago.  "The construction actually helped us," Keever said.

Mell Street Classroom Building construction to begin in December

Construction will begin in December on the Mell Classroom Building. The building will be 65,000 square feet and will be located on the west end of the library. The building will contain two large lecture halls and general classrooms that can hold from 20-30 students to 60-80 students, according to Sarah Smith, campus architect. According to Smith, all of the classrooms will have projection and white boards.

Auburn University, PUSH initiative meet in D.C. to discuss hunger

Presidents United to Solve Hunger and foreign dignitaries met in Washington, D.C., to discuss hunger issues and implement a plan of action to end hunger all over the world.  Paula Hunker, director of strategy and policy with the Hunger Solutions Institute in the College of Human Sciences said university presidents from six continents were represented at the meeting. Hunker said the United Nations is a major partner, as well as other organizations dedicated to ending hunger all over the world. Hunker said PUSH aims to encourage collaboration between universities. "The whole goal is for universities to work collectively," Hunker said.

Construction outside Haley Center to repair window leaks

Many have seen the construction going on around the Haley Center and wondered what for. The construction is for the 5th-9th floors of the tower.  Joe Ruscin, campus architect, said they are redoing the windows for the 5-9th floors.  "We are redoing the caulking around the windows and resealing the glass in the frames, so that we can prevent window leaks that have been occurring," Ruscin said.  Martha Koontz, the communications specialist with facilities management, said this will improve the Haley Center.  "A few windows had leaks, and we don't want them doing any damage," Koontz said.
