Board of Trustees approves plan to renovate Samford Park

Thirty descendants of the Toomer's Oaks will be planted in Samford Park in 2016. The Auburn University Board of Trustees met Friday, Nov. 7, and approved a the second phase of a plan to renovate Samford Park including the planting of 30 trees along the sidewalk from Toomer's Corner to Samford Hall.

Sentencing for the University Heights shooter has been delayed until Jan. 7. Desmonte Leonard will now find out if he will spend the rest of his life in prison or be sentenced to death next year, according to an Opelika-Auburn News report.

New Auburn City Council takes oath of office

Newly elected council members of the Auburn City Council took their oath office for the 2014-2018 term on Monday, Nov. 3 at the Auburn City Council chambers. After being sworn in, the new City Council elected Ron Anders as the new mayor pro tempore to serve as head of the council if Mayor Bill Ham is absent.

Auburn water towers scheduled for demolition

The Auburn Water Works Board has begun demolition of two water towers that are no longer useful to the water system, according to the city of Auburn. Demolition of the tank located on Armstrong Street, built in the 1930s, and the tank located on East University Drive, built in the 1970s, is scheduled to be complete by December.

Gay Street tailgate to feature AU vs. Ole Miss on the big screen

Join the Auburn Family on Nov. 1 in the Gay Street Parking Lot for the Auburn vs. Ole Miss game on the big screen. Festivities begin at 5 p.m followed by a 6 p.m kickoff. Admission is free and open to the public. This is an event for the entire family. Kids can enjoy inflatables while hot dogs and hamburgers will be available for purchase through on-site vendors. Downtown restaurants offer take out perfect for family dinner during the game. Guests can begin arriving at 5 p.m in order to secure a spot and are encouraged to bring tailgate chairs and blankets.

Bruce Pearl, men's basketball head coach, has partnered with Children's Harbor to host Fore the Children Golf Tournament. The event will take place Oct. 27 at Willow Point Golf Course and Country Club in Alexander City. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Children's Harbor is a non-profit dedicated to supporting children with serious illnesses. Fore the Children Golf Tournament is held completely through sponsorship. The Children's Harbor facilities are maintained through donations and by patrons, such as Pearl.
