Campus Rants

At the game this past weekend, my friend lost her sorority pin somewhere in the stadium. She made such a big deal out of finding it saying that this was unacceptable and no one else understood what a big deal it was for her to find it.

Feminist Alliance for 'Libe(her)ation'

A quotation by Gloria Steinem, founder of New York magazine and prominent feminist leader in the early '70s, graces the Feminist Alliance Web site."In my heart, I think a woman has two choices: either she's a feminist or a masochist."The Auburn Feminist Alliance addresses issues such as equal pay, rape prevention and awareness, body image and reproductive justice."Feminism is a strong word, especially around conservatives, and we want people to understand what it means and promote awareness," said Amanda Petersson, a senior in architecture thesis and president of the organization.Feminist Alliance sponsors events such as Love Your Body Day, Be a Hero of Safe Sex and shows films to spur discussion among members and guests."At Love Your Body Day, we have a dance instructor and a yoga instructor and talk about body confidence," Peterson said.

On the Sideline: The Athletic Trainers

A football program like Auburn's would not be as successful as it is without its athletic training staff to keep players intact throughout the season as well as off-season."Lots of planning, communication and organization goes into preparing for a game," said Clark Pearson, Auburn's head football athletic trainer.

Hollywood Misleads Teens About Pregnancy

We've all seen the dozens of magazine covers with yet another pregnant celebrity proudly showing off her "baby bump," and we remember the quirky one-liners from Juno like "your eggo is preggo." However, with teen and young adult pregnancy on the rise, Hollywood seems to be sending the message that it's not such a bad situation to be in."More than blaming Hollywood, although I think that's a legitimate part of it, I think we need to look at the parents who aren't talking to their kids anymore about these issues," said Bethany Garth, who works at Women's Hope Medical Clinic, a faith-based, nonprofit pregnancy resource center.

Concert Review: Sister Hazel, Trotline and Aslyn

I'm usually not much of a concert-goer, save the occasional outing to an Auburn Chamber Music Society recital or two, but I was coerced into going to the Lake Martin Amphitheater this weekend for their Labor Day Concert.I must say I was glad that Beth and Mollie invited me along on their trip, as Sister Hazel and the other bands there for the concert provided a wonderful experience.Aslyn, the opening act, was interesting, and I'm still not sure what to make of her.She had a weird Carole King vibe going on with her voice and frantic pounding of the piano while she was singing, but she didn't have Carole's stage presence. She also felt the need to explain each song before she sang it, telling us bits and pieces of her life and the inspirations behind her songs.Sufficed to say, some of her explanations about the songs were longer than the songs themselves.

Stop fighting the traffic, find the more unknown parking areas

Parking closer to campus has become a tough task for students trying to get to class, but there are some parking areas where students can park and will not get ticketed or towed.Trying to get a good park in the morning is like playing musical chairs, especially when trying to park in the C-zone parking lots by Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum off Donahue Drive and the student parking lot across from Jordan-Hare Stadium, which are the quickest and closest student parking areas to campus."I either come to school early or I just follow people around to get a park," said Ty-Anne Tench, a sophomore in nutrition dietetics. In addition to those two main C-zone parking lots, there are other parking areas available where students can park quickly, but may be unaware of.The parking lot in front of the Student Activities Center and some of the parking lot beside the AG Heritage Park off of West Samford Avenue are C-zone parking areas that require the proper parking decal or you will be fined. There are also C-zone parking areas along Biggio Drive off Donahue Drive, past the Intramural Fields and along Lem Morrison Drive."The intramural field parking spaces are usually available," said Rex Huffman, Auburn University Transit Manager.

Outdoor Adventure Club Ropes in Members

Canoeing, rock climbing, caving, camping, ropes courses and hiking are just a few of the exciting scenes displayed in the 104 pictures posted on the Outdoor Adventure Club's Facebook page.It is obvious after looking through these pictures that Auburn's OAC is not your grandma's campus organization. As written on the club's Web site, www.auburn.edu/oac, "The primary purpose of the Outdoor Adventure Club is to provide regular outdoor activities, promote interest in the outdoor activities and encourage the practice of limited impact outdoor ethics for Auburn University students."Members of OAC participate in activities that would make Bear Grylls of Discovery's "Man vs.

Reel Review: 'The Final Destination Failure'

Calling "The Final Destination" the worst film I have ever seen would certainly be hyperbole. It would also be false since I've seen 1987's "Ishtar" and Ed Wood's "Plan 9 from Outer Space."However, calling "The Final Destination" the worst movie I have ever seen while writing reviews for this paper would be perfectly adequate.I wrote this review for three years during my undergrad career, so this movie beat out several other horrible movies to win this title, most of which had Hilary Swank or Diane Keaton flailing about the screen aimlessly.Normally, I'd begin a plot synopsis here, but since "The Final Destination" is the fourth film in this never-ending saga, I don't feel the need to delve too deeply into something that is the storyline equivalent of a kiddie pool.Sufficed to say, an initial group of characters escape an almost certain deathly situation and spend the rest of the movie trying to escape other equally ghastly deaths, mostly to no avail.Yes, just like the three other movies.

Piccolo Jazz Lounge Premiers

Low lights, a crackling fire and the smooth steady rhythm of a jazz band transport the customers of Auburn's newest late-night drinking lounge back to the days of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.The Hotel and Conference Center at Auburn University's restaurant Piccolo officially opened its doors last Saturday to an excited and eager Auburn community. The name Piccolo stems from a number of definitions which are the inspiration for the restaurant.A group of interior design students at the University chose the name Piccolo because it means "little cousin" in Italian; it is the smallest wind instrument and also the smallest bottle of champagne. Each interpretation offers a glimpse into the heart of the intimate jazz lounge."We thought this was an amazing opportunity for students in one of the top-ranked programs in the country to get some real world experience," said Hans Van Der Reijden, managing director, Hotel Operations and Educational Initiatives at the Hotel and Conference Center at Auburn University. In the spring semester, five groups of interior design students were given free rein to come up with a concept, a design and a name for a fresh new take on Ariccia's lounge. At the end of the semester, the students presented their ideas to the hotel, a construction management company, contractors, interior design firms and a marketing company."We were blown away," Van Der Reijden said.
