Auburn University leads study to limit phosphorous pollution

Phosphorous-rich poultry litter is a big concern in Alabama and other states where the litter is used to fertilize fields. If the nutrient leaks into waterways, it can cause toxic algae blooms which can lead to deficient oxygen levels and destruction of life in the water.

Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox wins Democratic nomination for governor

Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox wins the Democratic nomination in the Alabama gubernatorial primary.  According to The New York Times, Maddox won 54.6% of Democratic votes, receiving 154,558 votes in total.  "With our victory tonight, I believe that a new day is possible in our politics," Maddox told supporters at his election watch party in Tuscaloosa.

Gov. Kay Ivey wins Republican nomination for Alabama Governor

Gov. Kay Ivey received 282,843 votes putting her at 56 percent of the vote with 89 percent of precincts reporting, according to The New York Times.
