Attempted Sexual Assault Near Campus

An attempted sexual assault occurred at an apartment complex near campus in the 400 block of West Magnolia Avenue between 1:40 and 2 a.m.The suspect is described as a muscular-built Hispanic male with dark complexion, 5'6", 150 lbs, wearing a gray shirt and blue jeans, according to Tommy Dawson, assistant police chief."If you see someone suspicious, particularly if they match this description, please give us a call," Dawson said. "If you see somebody suspicious, you can call 911 if you like, and I will send an officer out immediately to contact the person."A weapon was not involved in the incident."No weapon was used," Dawson said. "A woman was threatened, but no weapon was used, no weapon was ever seen."Not many other details are available at this time."I have got to be able to catch him first and then prosecute a case against him," Dawson said.Police are continuing to investigate the incident and urge the university community to be vigilant and exercise caution. Anyone with information pertaining to this incident should contact Auburn Police Department at 501-3140.

Grant Supports Appliance Recycling

Alabamians have a window of opportunity to spend less money and energy while having the ability to green.Alabama will receive $4,473,000 in rebates on old appliances in a state effort to become more sustainable.Alabama will implement a mail-in rebate program to help residents replace older, inefficient appliances with Energy Star qualified appliances.Alabamians have reserved approximately 18,500 rebates.

Unanimous 'Yes' For Open Containers

Unanimous consent of the Auburn City Council amended and passed the ordinance to allow open alcoholic containers on sidewalks at outdoor cafes in the city.The ordinance was amended to appease all council members after a clarification was made on what type of businesses will be affected.This ordinance will not apply to downtown bars unless the business also serves food, according to the council."It was an amendment that eliminated one city facility from any possibility of it being utilized," said Mayor Bill Ham.

City Encourages 'Traveling With Care'

The kickoff of a new campaign hopes to encourage safety awareness for pedestrians and drivers alike in Auburn.The City of Auburn and Auburn University has teamed up to tackle this issue in light of recent occurrences of people being struck by cars on Magnolia Avenue and College Street."It has been a long ongoing relationship between the city and between Auburn, the campus, to look at all forms of safety," said Auburn University President Jay Gogue.

Baja Burrito To Replace Flip Flops

Honors were given to employee of the month and all resolutions were approved Tuesday night at the Auburn City Council meeting.In the Committee of the Whole meeting before the Council meeting, the results for the City of Auburn's 2010 Citizen Survey were presented to the council.The survey is conducted annually to evaluate citizen satisfaction with the city government and operations, according to auburnalabama.org."The thing I am most pleased with are the areas citizens wanted to pay attention to, traffic in neighborhoods, speeding and intersection improvement," said Mayor Bill Ham.

Knology Ends 50-Year Cable Monopoly

Cable TV customers of Auburn will gain the knowledge of competition between their service providers.Auburn was introduced to cable television in 1959 and has had only one choice in service, said Mayor Bill Ham.Knology is moving into the area and will put an end to the 50-year reign of a market monopolized by Charter Communications.A groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday April 1 at the Knology office in the Tutton Hill development off Hamilton Road."We are thrilled Knology is willing to bring high-end Internet and all the capability that come with their services to the local area," Ham said.

Domino's Receives Bomb Threat

A bomb threat to Domino's Pizza on Magnolia Avenue sent a swarm of police to secure and inspect the scene this morning."Got a phone a phone call, somebody complaining about finding a rat supposedly on their pizza," said Sonya Parker, the employee who answered the call. "They said they came in this morning and got the pizza, but we haven't had anybody in here with an order."
