Auburn is hiring coach D.J. Durkin to be the program’s next defensive coordinator, first reported by ESPN’s Chris Low. Durkin has been a defensive coordinator in the SEC for three different schools prior to being hired by Auburn. He operated as DC/linebackers coach in 2023-24 and DC/safeties coach in 2022-23 at Texas A&M.

As Auburn made the hire of Derrick Nix as offensive coordinator and running backs coach official, it also filled the vacant quarterbacks coach position. Hugh Freeze promoted Kent Austin, who served as a special assistant to the head coach for the Tigers last season, to coach the Tigers' signal callers in 2024.

Hugh Freeze named Derrick Nix Auburn’s next offensive coordinator on Wednesday, Jan. 17 – the third addition to the on-field staff this offseason. Nix will also coach running backs for the Tigers. The move was confirmed by Auburn on Wednesday afternoon.
