1. Running on the treadmill or outside increases the heart rate and relieves stress.
"I usually run 3 miles or so," said Hector Reyes, junior in chemical engineering. "I enjoy it because it's a good workout, plus you feel good afterward. I played soccer for 14 years so I guess it just grew on me. I would definitely recommend it to other people. It's good for you, plus it's just a nice way to disconnect from schoolwork and stuff if you need a break."
2. Zumba is a dance-fitness program that focuses on moving the whole body to popular songs.
"I enjoy Zumba because it's not your average workout," said Cheniece Richardson, junior in hotel and restaurant management. "There are no repetitions or grunting, just fun and dance. If you have a dance background, or just like to dance in general, you will like it."
Richardson said Zumba is fun with a group of friends or alone because the instructors are upbeat, and it is a great calorie burner.
"You get so lost in the dancing and having fun, you don't realize you'll be sore the next day," she said.
3. Yoga is a meditative practice that helps with flexibility and stress relief. "I come to yoga class every week," said Elizabeth Smith, junior in early childhood education. "I like the absolute peace of mind you have after you exit the class. It is almost like a runner's high when you are finished. Calmness comes over you."
Yoga poses and postures improve strength and flexibility.
"You get toned, but don't turn into a beast with big muscles," Smith said. "Yoga is my 'me' time."
4. Swimming can develop strength and endurance by the keeping heart rate up while taking pressure off joints.
"I swam on the swim team in high school," said George Wheatley, sophomore in electrical engineering. "It is not as harsh on your body as running, and it is a lot easier to control your breathing."
5. Butts and Guts, offered at the Student Act, is a class that focuses on building strength in the abs, back, buns and thighs.
"I love going to Butts and Guts each week," said Paige Rood, junior in English. "It is really intense, and I can feel my body getting stronger each time I go. I usually go with some of my friends, and we keep each other accountable."
