Data Security Response Underway
Auburn is investigating a data security incident involving the exposure of personal information for certain current, former and prospective students. We’re providing this announcement to inform you about Auburn’s response, offer resources and guidance if you have any questions and remind the campus community about the importance of information security.
Independent computer forensics experts retained by Auburn have determined that personal information was inadvertently accessible online between Sept. 1, 2014, and March 2, 2015. The exposure resulted from configuration issues with a new device installed to replace a broken server. Auburn officials corrected the internal issue the same day it was discovered in early March, and additional network security measures have been implemented.
Although there is no evidence of any actual or attempted misuse of this personal information, out of an abundance of caution we are contacting each individual whose information was involved and offering two free years of credit monitoring and identity theft protection and restoration services. If your information was among the affected records, you will soon receive a letter with helpful resources and specifics on the services available. In addition, a confidential assistance line is available at 877-237-7191. Please use reference number 655-703-2515 when calling.
Auburn takes this matter and the security of the personal information entrusted to us very seriously. Information security is a shared responsibility, and we encourage diligence by each member of the campus community.
