Park(ing) Day is a worldwide annual event that has been taking place since 2005. The third Friday every September, design firms and conservationists worldwide take over parking spots and reclaim them for public use.
The American Society of Landscape Architects and Freedom by Design run the event in Auburn.
Freedom by Design is a community service group in Auburn dedicated to using sustainable materials and reusing found items to give back to the community. Rebecca Wiggs, treasurer of Freedom by Design, said this event is βto raise awareness about the need for more public urban space,β an issue very important to both Freedom by Design and the American Society of Landscape Architects.
At the event, several parking spaces were blocked off and barricaded as a hang-out area with reused palettes to sit on and games to play that were made sustainably. One of the most popular attractions was a see-saw repurposed from a wooden bench.
"The event was designed to globally get people thinking about the need for more public space, we hope we have done that here in Auburn,β Wiggs said.
