A spirit that is not afraid

Women from the Auburn area flocked to the hotel to meet and connect with other women in business.

On Tuesday, April 24, the first annual Women in Business lunch was held at Auburn Hotel’s grand ballroom.

There was a large turnout with almost 200 women in the ballroom. The women were all seated at tables with people working in different industries to encourage productive conversation on what being a woman in business is like and what inspires them to continue working. The event was presented by Three Sixty {real estate} and sponsored by Alabama Power, AuburnBank, River Bank & Trust, and Wells Fargo.

According to Lolly Steiner, president of the Auburn Chamber, “Auburn has a strong tradition of women in important-impacting leadership roles; we wanted to create an event that would celebrate that tradition, inspire others who might be on that path and encourage women in our community to support one another”.

The keynote speaker for this event was Major General Sheryl E. Gordon, who was recognized as the new leader of the Alabama National Guard back in July 2017.

Gordon attended both Birmingham-Southern College and Auburn University obtaining a major in education administration from Auburn University Montgomery.

Prior to her position as the leader of the Alabama National Guard, Gordon served as the second lieutenant in the Alabama Army National Guard in 1981 in addition to other roles in the state. Gordon is the first women to hold this position in Alabama’s National Guard, replacing Major General Perry Smith.

Gordon spoke on the prejudice and judgment she received in her typically male-dominated field. Although all the women in the room were from different industries, they were all able to agree that they faced a stigma against working women.
