The Big Event is exactly what it sounds like: a big event.
Each year students volunteer to provide various services to homes, churches and offices in the Auburn community. The services range in everything from painting, to yard work, to cleaning, to organizing.
"I feel like this is an important event because the University takes up so much of the City of Auburn, and this is a good way to go there and give back," said Emma Grace Laird, executive director of the Big Event.
The Big Event kicks off tomorrow, March 5, at 8 a.m on the Student Center Greenspace. Chick-fil-A breakfast will be served and T-shirts will be available to purchase. Laird said speakers will also be there to pump up the crowd, and the Student Center Starbucks will be open early.
"Then from nine to one we are out in the community working," Laird said. "We are hoping for between 1,500–2,000 volunteers."
Volunteers are divided into groups that are sent to areas on a need basis. Some jobs require five people, while bigger jobs require 10–15.
"We have about 200 job sites," Laird said. "People send in their site request form and the job committee member that's assigned to the job site meets with them to see what all they want done."
Volunteer registration for the Big Event closed March 3.
