Auburn residents gathered on Wednesday for the long-awaited opening of Auburn's first Publix."I'd rather shop at Publix than any other grocery store because there is a wider selection of products here, they have really good deals and employees are willing to help," said student Danielle Ray.

Auburn Train Depot Listed as a Place in Peril

The Auburn Train Depot, built in 1904, has been placed on the list of Alabama's most endangered historical sites. Since 1994, theAlabama Historical Commission (AHC) and the Alabama Trust for Historic Preservation have sponsored the Places in Peril program. The program's goal is to make communities aware of historic buildings, like the AuburnTrain Depot, that have been condemned and neglected.

Even though he was stationed 5546 miles away on a peacekeeping mission at Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo, Auburn student and U.S. Army Reserve Spc. Josiah Greene found a way to reach out to Shon Coleman, a blue-chip offensive lineman from Olive Branch, Miss. who signed with Auburn in February.

Giuliani Encourages Students with 6 Leadership Principles

New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani spoke at Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum Monday about his six principles of leadership and how they relate to young people."Most of the time in college, I don't think you display leadership, you just learn about it," Giuliani said. "This is the time to really acquire the basic knowledge that you're going to use for the rest of your life. And I was taught one of the best ways to learn leadership was to copy it from other people."

Attempted Sexual Assault Near Campus

An attempted sexual assault occurred at an apartment complex near campus in the 400 block of West Magnolia Avenue between 1:40 and 2 a.m.The suspect is described as a muscular-built Hispanic male with dark complexion, 5'6", 150 lbs, wearing a gray shirt and blue jeans, according to Tommy Dawson, assistant police chief."If you see someone suspicious, particularly if they match this description, please give us a call," Dawson said. "If you see somebody suspicious, you can call 911 if you like, and I will send an officer out immediately to contact the person."A weapon was not involved in the incident."No weapon was used," Dawson said. "A woman was threatened, but no weapon was used, no weapon was ever seen."Not many other details are available at this time."I have got to be able to catch him first and then prosecute a case against him," Dawson said.Police are continuing to investigate the incident and urge the university community to be vigilant and exercise caution. Hugs Come Swiftly to Auburn

After Taylor Swift spontaneously surprised Auburn students, she left many questions behind on how the surprise came about.Ryan Leander and Michael Wekall finally received the hugs they have been seeking from Swift, after receiving their third challenge via e-mail Monday at 12:30 p.m. Swift asked them to gather as many people as possible and host a karaoke show at 2 p.m. in the Auburn University Hotel and Dixon Conference Center.

Renting Textbooks Proves Viable Option

If students who rented books from Anders want to hold on to their savings, they must return their books by Wednesday, May 5.Anders was the only bookstore to provide book rentals in Auburn this semester, offering immediate savings on more than 100 titles."You pay half of the new price whether it's a used book or a new book, and then we hold your credit card number in the system, and if you don't return your book, you get charged," said Julie Ward, Anders textbook manager.
