Tennis sweeps Hokies

Auburn Men's Tennis had a tri- umphant weekend in Blacksburg, Va.The Tigers swept the compe- tition in the Hokie Challenge, a 3-day tournament with eight sin- gles flights, as well as four doubles flights."It was a good weekend for us," said Gabor Zoltan Pelva, assistant coach of the men's tennis team.

Equestrian saddles up

Horsing around isn't an option for the No. 1 Auburn Equestrian team.Having already competed in eight meets last semester, the girls are looking ahead in full confidence to Sunday's challenge against Oklahoma State.Despite suffering two losses, one at Georgia and the other at home against South Carolina, the girls have high hopes for the rest of their season.Junior Dottie Grubb explained how difficult it is for an equestrian team in the SEC to go undefeated.Both Georgia and South Carolina have strong programs with similar riding styles and talent levels equal to Auburn."Those losses could have been prevented," Grubb said.

Men's Basketball loses to Vandy

Though Auburn (10-10, 1-4 SEC) had a 16-point lead just before the half, Vanderbilt (15-3, 4-0 SEC) came out on top in Saturday's matchup, defeating the Tigers 82-74.The Commodores had a strong second half, shooting 64 percent from the field.Senior Lucas Hargrove led the Ti- gers with 19 points and 10 rebounds on the night, while senior DeWayne Reed had 16 points and sophomore Frankie Sullivan 14.Hargrove opened the second half strong, putting Auburn up 45- 32 with a steal and a dunk.

A different look at AU Sports

This semester we have implemented a new page in the Sports section of The Auburn Plainsman.The Lifesports page is dedicated to all sports outside of varsity sports.Of course, we are all huge varsity sports fans, but everyone enjoys reading their own or their roommate's and friend's name in the paper.I was once a member of a club sport here, and hardly anyone knew we existed.Even though we practiced five times a week, not including conditioning practices, no one else recognized our hard work.

Women's Basketball Loses Close Game to No. 21 Vanderbilt 61-60.

Vanderbilt University senior guard Lauren Lueders nailed a 3-pointer to break a 53-53 second-half tie and the No. 21 Commodores (14-5, 3-3 SEC) held off the Auburn Tigers (11-8, 2-4 SEC) in the final seconds to pull out a 61-60 victory in front of a crowd of 2,658 at Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum Thursday night.Auburn junior guard Alli Smalley had a game-high 19 points in the losing effort while sophomore guard Parrisha Simmons chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds.Auburn head coach Nell Fortner spoke on the disappointing loss after the game.

Men's Basketball Gets First SEC Win Against LSU

The Auburn Tigers stepped up to defeat the LSU Tigers 84-80, giving Auburn its first SEC win.Along with senior guard DeWayne Reed's 21 points and sophomore guard Frankie Sullivans's 15 points, senior forward Lucas Hargrove, senior guard Tay Waller and senior center Brendon Knox all broke double figures in Baton Rouge, La."It keeps the defense thrown off," Sullivan said.

MLK Week: Trooper Taylor Recalls His Heritage

For Auburn wide receivers coach Trooper Taylor, commitment to Auburn football doesn't stop for a federal holiday.While the rest of town slept in Monday morning, he was on the road recruiting.Taylor said he is aware coaching isn't a regular job with regular hours.However, Taylor said traveling does not take away from the importance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Auburn Gymnastics Flips for the Cure

No. 9 Auburn Gymnastics lost to No. 2 Oklahoma in a close 196.300-195.325 match Friday night at Beard-Eaves Coliseum.A crowd of 5,750 fans cheered as both teams sported pink leotards to battle breast cancer during the annual "Flip for the Cure" meet."By no means were we the best we could be, but we did better than we did last week," said head coach Jeff Thompson.

Coach's Corner: Sticking it With Thompson

In the past 11 years, Auburn Gymnastics head coach Jeff Thompson has led the Tigers to one NCAA national championship game appearance, seven NCAA regional championships and has led individual women to nine NCAA championship appearances.He has also been SEC Coach of the Year twice.

Men's Lacrosse Prepares to Face-off in Spring 2010

The Auburn University Men's Lacrosse club has begun practice in preparation to build on last year's undefeated regular season.Junior midfielder Anthony Generotti said he thinks there's not as much pressure this season because of the undefeated season."I feel that there is a fair amount of pressure every season, we have been a contender for the SELC title for the past few years and definitely have a target on our backs," Generotti said.Despite the perfect regular season, the Tigers fell to Florida State University in the SELC tournament and failed to reach the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association tournament.Junior goaltender Alex Barnes said losing in the SELC semifinals last season shouldn't have an effect on this season's team."Losing is never fun, but I'm not thinking about that," Barnes said.

The Auburn Women's Lacrosse club opens its season Saturday by traveling to Gainesville, Fla., to match up against the University of Florida and the University of Miami."Florida teams have been very big struggles for us in the past," said co-captain junior Katie Backer.

Keke Carrier named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week

Keshonda Raquel Carrier, also known as KeKe, has been a huge asset to the Auburn Women's Basketball team for the past four years.Born in Lake Charles, La., the Auburn center was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week at the beginning of the month.She is one of the first Auburn Basketball players to earn this award."I really like playing in the SEC," Carrier said.

Women's Basketball Falls to USC, Looks Forward to Vandy

The Auburn Women's Basketball team (11-7, 2-3 SEC) hit the road Sunday for an SEC match up against South Carolina (10-7, 3-2 SEC), but poor shooting by the Tigers contributed to a 63-49 loss.Senior center KeKe Carrier led Auburn with 14 points and junior guard Alli Smalley finished with 12.USC held Auburn to 39.6 percent from the field.
