Attendees of the 10th-Annual Mayors Jeans & Jackets Ball on Thursday, April 30, enjoyed an elegant evening of music and fine dining to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Lee County. The evening at the event center in downtown Opelika kicked off with a cocktail hour, during which the Atlanta-based jazz band 1st Generation performed, and guests could mingle and bid on various items in a silent auction.
As Katharine Cooper Cater Hall nears its 100th anniversary, plans for its renovations are underway. The Auburn University Board of Trustees approved renovations for Cater Hall at its April 17 meeting.

The “It’s On Us” Sexual Assault Prevention resolution was passed at the SGA’s Monday, April 20, meeting. Trey Fields, senator for the College of Liberal Arts, promoted the bill and discussed the goals of the campaign as well as the bill. “This bill aims to instill a shared responsibility to prevent sexual assault and to provide resources for individuals to recognize and pre-empt the pattern of sexual violence,” Fields said. The White House and The Center for American Progress launched the campaign in September of 2014. According to The White House Blog, “studies estimate that one in five women is sexually assaulted while in college.

Best-selling author Lydia Netzer shared her approach to writing and discussed her book, “Shine Shine Shine,” at the Auburn Public Library on Thursday, April 23, as the conclusion to the second annual One Book, One Village community reading program. Director Anna Ferens’ documentary of Polish biochemist Waclaw Syzbalski’s life was shown in a screening in Thach Hall Tuesday, April 28 at 6 p.m. The documentary titled “The Essence of Life” shows the connection between Syzbalski’s research and the historical moments he witnessed, such as the Russian invasion of Poland in 1939, according to Ferens. "When I talked to him I decided he was a good person for a documentary because of the historical background in his life," Ferens said.
Fifty-one Auburn University undergraduate students and six graduate students have achieved a perfect pass rate in the exam for Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics in February. This exam is a part of the Strategic Hospitality Management course offered at Auburn.
Auburn University was named one of The Princeton Review’s Guide to 353 Green Colleges. Auburn was the only university in the state to be included in the list, according to Mike Kensler, director of the Office of Sustainability. More than 2,000 schools were considered for the guide before the 353 featured schools were selected according to Kensler. Kensler said the schools were chosen based on the criteria in a survey compiled by The Princeton Review, which determines the level of focus that the university puts on fostering a green environment on their campuses including energy conservation plan, food waste, sustainability academic programs, public transportation efficiency and presence of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) buildings. LEED buildings criteria include energy efficiency, water efficiency, building health responsible construction, design and management, according to Kensler. Kensler said buildings are inspected to make sure the building is built to LEED standards.

SGA’s Monday, April 27, meeting saw the unanimous passing of two reserve fund requests as well as the passing of two commendations in support of Auburn faculty. Brock Hendon, senator for the Harbert College of Business, discussed a reserve fund request that will bring a NewTek Tricaster 460 to the Eagle Eye TV newsroom.

Relay for Life hosted a record-breaking fundraising event Tuesday, April 25 at Auburn University.
The concept for CityFest originated on a restaurant napkin in 2000, when two Parks and Recreation employees decided over lunch to put together an arts and crafts festival. It began small, like many festivals, but, now, the festival has 10,000-15,000 patrons who attend each year, according to Custer.
