AU Singers to perform at Kreher’s Music in the Forest

The AU Singers will entertain the public with song and dance as part of a concert series hosted by the Kreher Preserve and Nature Center on Saturday, April 11, at 4:30 p.m. The Music in the Forest series is a collaboration between the preserve and the department of music to provide the community with musical entertainment while benefitting KPNC’s children’s educational programs and AUMD’s student scholarship fund. “I’ve always enjoyed the energetic AU Singers and know firsthand how much time and effort is put into their performances,” said Sarah Collins, administrative assistant for the department of music.

Spinning into action: University prepares for tornado season

Transitioning into the springtime, pollen isn’t the only thing expected in Alabama. As tornado season approaches, Auburn University Emergency Management lays out its severe weather procedures. Chance Corbett, associate director of Emergency Management, said every campus building has a designated indoor shelter area marked with a green “Severe Weather Shelter” sign.

Annual Citizen Survey reveals high satisfaction

City leaders were able to find out how the citizens of Auburn feel about the way the city is run after getting the results of the Annual Citizen Survey. Chris Tatham, Vice President with the ETC Institute, a market research firm for local governments, presented the survey results at the Auburn City Council meeting on April 7. Auburn ranks among the highest in citizen satisfaction from the more than 800 cities where ETC conducts surveys, according to Tatham. “The nice thing when I get to come present here is Auburn is one of the standard setters for community performance,” Tatham said. Ninety-two percent of survey respondents said they were satisfied with the quality of life in Auburn.

Crime reports from March 30 to April 5

The following crimes were reported by the Auburn Police Division from March 30-April 5: March 30: -Torture and willful abuse of a child involving a family was reported in Auburn. -Second-degree sexual abuse was reported in Auburn. -Second-degree theft of property and third-degree theft of property were reported at the 1000 block of N.

SGA hears goals for coming year

The Student Government Association’s on Monday, April 6, saw the appointment of a new president and vice president for the graduate school and also provided members of SGA exec the opportunity to discuss goals for the upcoming year. Jesse Westerhouse, executive vice president of initiatives, discussed a resolution that will come across the senate floor next week.

Student media restructuring leads to the elimination of nine University positions

Nine student media employees were unaware of what was about to happen when they walked through the doors of the Office of Student Affairs March 19. Elizabeth Stone, communications specialist for the Office of the Vice President, and Bobby Woodard, vice president of Student Affairs, restructured the student media program and will lay off nine people from their jobs, some of whom have been working for the University for more than a decade, starting May 15.

Auburn alumnus shares journey to success as novelist

Auburn alumni Ace Atkins shared his journey from newspaper reporter to bestselling crime novelist as this year’s speaker in the Graduate School’s seventh annual New Horizons Lecture in the Foy Ballroom on Thursday, April 2. In his lecture, “From Notebook to New York Times Bestseller: The Journey of a Novelist,” Atkins focused on his time at Auburn and the chain of events that led him to become the author of 17 crime novels.

Researcher predicts water scarceness

Auburn University assistant professor Shufen “Susan” Pan has conducted research on global climate change that suggests there may be water scarcity in more than half of the world’s land area by the end of the 21st century. Pan is one of the researchers for Auburn’s International Center for Climate and Global Change research, which has been recognized by the White House for its contributions to the U.S.

STDCheck.com ranks Auburn with top five highest STD rates

During the first week of March, STDcheck.com released a blog stating Auburn University and the University of Alabama are among the top five colleges with the highest sexually transmitted disease rates. The article did not provide statistics specific to Auburn University or the University of Alabama or attribute from what source the rates originated.

South Donahue dorm burglaries

As students returned home from spring break, residents in the South Donahue Residence Hall discovered several of their valuables missing. According to the Auburn Police Division news release, “assorted electronic devices, video game consoles and jewelry” were reported stolen March 29.
