In 2009, a photo of Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps smoking a bong caused him to lose a sponsorship from Kellogg's. He was also suspended from USA Swimming for three months. The year before, he won eight gold medals. When the photo was released, he was crucified by the media.

Zazu Gastropub relocates to Opelika

This past year, downtown Auburn acquired a variety of new restaurants, such as BurgerFi and Uncle Maddio's, but now, it's losing one. Zazu Gastropub is moving from its downtown location on East Magnolia Avenue to a new Opelika location in on 112 S. 8th St.

Uber must abide by same regulations as other taxis in Auburn (updated)

Auburn taxi owners want the Auburn City Council to stop Uber. Jeff Steiger, owner of taxi company KGM Auburn Trax, spoke on behalf of other taxi companies to the City Council at the Tuesday, Sept. 9, council meeting and asked the City Council to apply taxi regulations to Uber.

Forest Ecology Preserve brings local musician for Songs in the Woods

In the middle of the forest, folk music plays as you are surrounded by nature-happy people. Children play and the setting seems to resemble one from a fairy tale. Songs in the Woods is an outdoor concert held at Auburn University's Forest Ecology Preserve and Nature Center that brings together music and nature. The performer this year is the Dave Potts Band.

One-Sixty Ross will feature elevators, a parking deck and on-site security.

Auburn makes room for a new apartment complex in 2015

A new upscale apartment complex is coming to Auburn in Aug. 2015. One-Sixty Ross, located across the street from the Auburn Police Division, will be able to house 642 residents. The complex will feature elevators, parking deck and on-site security at their five and a half acre complex.

Activist group announces strike for Opelika fast-food restaurants then moves demonstration to Atlanta (updated)

An activist group announced on Tuesday, Sept. 2, a strike of fast-food workers would be held on Thursday, Sept. 4, in Opelika's Tigertown shopping center. On Thursday morning the same group, named 'Low pay is not OK', announced workers from Opelika would instead protest with other workers in Atlanta.

OPINION: Auburn and the black state of mind

Last week, I was asked what it was like to be a black student at Auburn. At first, I didn't quite know how to answer that question. With me being often teased when I was younger for not being "black" enough, my first thought was that I was the wrong person to answer that kind of question. New Toomer's trees have officially taken root

A day after a contentious City Council election for the Ward 1 seat, Councilmember Arthur Dowdell's half-brother, Larry Taylor, filed an amended complaint against council member-elect Clemon Byrd. Byrd won the Aug. 26 election, 246-147.

Korean classes come to Auburn

The Auburn University King Sejong Institute is offering an eight-week, not-for-credit Korean language courses. Each course costs $99. Students can choose between beginner and intermediate levels. The courses will begin Oct. 13, the original starting date of the second semester. The first semester was cancelled because of low enrollment.

Downtown businesses prepare for gameday crowds to roll in

Cliff Hare and his wife Emily closed up shop at their business, Auburn Art, 40 minutes before kickoff Nov. 30. They sprinted through downtown and across campus, making it to the stadium just in time to see the Iron Bowl begin. One second before the game ended, Chris Davis ran back a missed field goal 109 yards to give Auburn the win, 34-28.

Paddleboarding classes will be from Aug. 25 - Oct. 12.

Chewacla steps up to paddleboarding

A new workout trend has been spreading across the country, and now it has floated its way to Auburn. Stand-up paddleboarding is now being offered at Chewacla State Park. Lori Fuller, stand-up paddleboarding instructor, created a partnership with Mountain High Outfitters where participants can rent boards for each class.
