Auburn Student Science Program receives grant from National Science Foundation

The Auburn Student Space Program has received a grant from the National Science Foundation to design, build and test two CubeSat satellites. The idea began when J-M Wersinger, director of the Auburn University Student Space Program, was working with Dr. Michael Briggs at the University of Alabama-Huntsville. "We had been talking for a while about doing some joint work on CubeSats because he had been doing work on a big satellite,"  Wersinger said.

AUInvolve reaches 500 organizations and counting

The Office of Student Involvement announced this week that there are now more than 500 student organizations on campus. John-Michael Roehm, coordinator for the Center of Student Involvement, said it's "incredible" to have so many organizations available to students. "[It] means there are more opportunities for students at Auburn to get plugged in and to get involved in something that interests them," Roehm said.

Football brings tourism and traffic jams

It might be hard to remember while seething on South College Street in game day traffic that traffic means tourism — and tourism greatly benefits the Loveliest Village on the Plains, according to Penny Smith, finance director for the City of Auburn. According to Smith, home games cause increased sales within the city in numerous ways. “We see increased sales tax from purchases within the city, both for restaurants and for goods, like game day paraphernalia and that kind of thing," Smith said. "We also have lodging taxes for hotel stays within the city limits ... and then of course the sales of the actual tickets to the game produce a sales tax also.

Man charged with car break-in, theft of property

Auburn police have arrested Brandon T. Jones-Rogers, 24, of Auburn and charged him with unlawful breaking and entering of a motor vehicle and second-degree theft of property, according to a news release issued by the Auburn Police Division.  APD responded to a call of a car break-in at an apartment complex at the 300 block of Opelika Road at approximately 3 a.m. Officers were given a description of an individual seen pulling door handles and entering unlocked vehicles, according to the release.

Hormel recalls Skippy peanut butter in several states, including Alabama

Hormel Foods has voluntarily recalled 153 cases, meaning 1,871, pounds of Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter because of the possibility that some jars contain small metal shavings, according to a news release issued by the company. The company recalled the peanut butter in Alabama, Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Arkansas and Delaware.

Alabama and Taiwan Sign Agreement to Recognize Driver's Licenses

On Friday October 16th 2015, representatives of The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency met with representatives from the government of Taiwan, to sign an agreement for the mutual recognition of Driver’s Licenses in Alabama and Taiwan.  Spencer Collier, The Alabama Secretary of Law Enforcement, and Kay Ivey, Alabama’s Lieutenant Governor, met with Huei-Yuan Tai, the Director General of the Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in Atlanta, to sign the agreement.  "We are pleased to collaborate with Taiwan on this plan to streamline the exchange of valid non-commercial driver licenses for the citizens of Alabama who may be living in Taiwan and for the people of Taiwan who may be living in our state,” Secretary Collier said.  The agreement benefits Alabama by supporting business investments between Alabama and Taiwan.
