Women return to City Council

Through the changes of city government, from an alderman system to the current Council and City Manager system, women have been involved in Auburn politics. Except for a nine-year gap from 1963-72, at least one woman served on the Council from 1955-2013, according to David Dorton, director of public affairs for Auburn.

Students regularly volunteer at local church's food pantry

Friday mornings at 8:30, a group of students from IMPACT, a group that provides volunteer opportunities, meets at the intermural fields on campus to make the trip to the Auburn United Methodist Church to work at the church's food pantry. The AUMC Food Pantry is the product of two women, Shirley Rose Glisson and Reeder Dulaney. Fourteen years ago, the duo banded together to start the charity.

It was almost midnight as fans began to exit Jordan-Hare Stadium after Auburn's win against LSU. After rolling Toomer's Corner, traffic began to circulate as police officers stationed themselves at intersections and barricades to direct thousands of cars safely out of Auburn.

A public forum on gun and domestic violence was held at the Lee County Emergency Management office in Opelika on Tuesday night, Nov. 18. The Auburn alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sponsored the event with Lee County Sherriff Jay Jones and Lisa Stephens, director of the Domestic Violence Intervention Center.

Local woman forms musical nonprofit for youth

Nia Denham has a passion for music -- specifically, to help young musicians find places toperform. For the past five years, Niahas helped young musicians in the Auburn-Opelika area find places to perform. This year, she decided to form Amplify Auburn, a nonprofit group helping young musicians find performance venues and make music connections in the area.

Giving back during the holiday season

The community has many places to help those in need, but they are always looking for more volunteers. Lakeview Baptist Church, the Food Bank of East Alabama and Auburn United Methodist Church are some of the places accepting food donations, especially around Thanksgiving.

Student bouncers secure bars

Quixotes was packed Nov. 8, even though it was the Saturday night after Auburn lost to Texas A&M 41-38. After the game, fans of both teams found their way to the bars. The line outside Quixotes stretched to the doors of the Gap next door.

Board denies $1 million claim brought by parents of murdered Lauren Burk

A state board denied a $1 million claim made by the parents of murdered student Lauren Burk Wednesday, Nov. 12. Burk's parents, Jim Burk and Viviane Guerchon, filed the claim against Auburn University in February with the Alabama Board of Adjustment alleging the University didn't provide adequate security.

Apartment moratorium public hearing scheduled

Auburn is considering instituting a moratorium that would entail a delay or suspension of the construction of new apartment buildings. A public hearing on the issue is scheduled to take place at the Auburn Chamber of Commerce at 714 E. Glenn Ave. on Monday, Nov. 17 at 6:30 p.m.
