While Auburn can be a happy home for most of the community, there are some citizens who cannot feel safe in their own homes.
The AU Singers sang and danced the afternoon away before a crowd at the Music in the Forest event at the Kreher Preserve and Nature Center on Saturday, April 11. The Music in the Forest benefit concert, which is now in its second year, is a collaboration between KPNC and Auburn University’s Music Department, according to Jennifer Lolley, outreach administrator for KPNC.
UPC hosted “Comedy on the Plains,” on Tuesday, April 14, in the Student Activity Center. The guest of honor was Nick Offerman, known for playing Ron Swanson on "Parks and Recreation." Miranda Marty, UPC director of speakers and comedians and senior in political science, said the student body as well as the members of the community responded positively to the announcement of Offerman’s visit. “With the selling out of all of the tickets within like the first 24 hours of the event, I would say that’s a pretty positive response,” Marty said.
This year’s Auburn CityFest will be held Saturday, April 25, from 9a.m.-4p.m. at Kiesel Park. CityFest is going on its 15th year as Auburn’s largest free outdoor festival.
It was frozen yogurt, the cupcake and now it is the ice pop. Throughout the past few years, ice pop shops have been popping up, with many people racing to get the chilly treat. These aren’t the ice pops you grew up with; many ice pop shops sell ice pops that contain all natural, or sometimes even local ingredients. Two of the well-known ice pop shops of the Southeast are actually located in Auburn and Opelika, and they are Steel City Pops and the Pop Factory at the Overall Company.
SGA’s Monday, April 13 meeting saw the unanimous passing of a resolution that was introduced during last week’s senate meeting as well as the confirmation of the SGA cabinet and the SGA cabinet assistant vice presidents. Jesse Westerhouse, executive vice president of initiatives, discussed the resolution that will change the way Auburn students register for classes.
A new class will be offered in fall 2015 called Engage Interact Lead. The class will focus on women’s approach to environmental leadership. Barbara Baker, executive director of Women’s Leadership Institute, said she decided this class would be a good idea after teaching various courses in community and civic engagement minor.
Nelly will perform at Auburn Airwaves despite his arrest, according to Sagar Leva, UPC director of major entertainment and senior in finance. Nelly was arrested Saturday, April 11 in Putnam County, Tennessee after state troopers found methamphetamine, marijuana, other drug paraphernalia and guns on his bus, according to a statement released by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security.
An updated version of the 2013 Auburn University Annual Security and Fire Safety Report developed by Auburn University Department of Public Safety & Security and the Auburn University Department of Risk Management & Safety is now available, according to an email sent by Auburn University Public Safety and Security. The report includes crime statistics and information about campus safety policies such as crime reporting, emergency procedures and notification, campus evacuation, missing students, alcohol and drug use, weapons, sexual assault and dating violence domestic violence and stalking. A municipal election that will decide if bonds will be issued to build a new high school will take place on April 28. If the voters approve the $78.39 million bond issue, the debt will be repaid using Auburn’s 5-mill fund, which has existed since the 1940’s, according to a city press release.
One Opelika teen has recently taken her dream of becoming a professional musician to the next level with the release of her first original album, “Colorful.” Abby Miracle, 16, plays ukulele and guitar and has been singing and writing her own songs since she was in elementary school. Abby said she plans to release an EP record this fall and “write songs until I run out of ideas, then write about other people’s stories.” “She did her very first solo in church, and when she was in the kindergarten choir, she was hand-selected by the minister of music to sing with the adult choir at Christmas time,” said Carol Ann Miracle, Abby’s mother. Abby was 6 years old when she first sang at First Baptist Church. “I sang ‘Happy Birthday, Jesus’ in front of, like, a thousand people,” Abby said. Carol Ann said she has noticed a richer tone in her daughter’s voice every year, as well as more security in her performances. “She’s just grown to the point where she knows this is what she’s meant to do forever in some capacity,” Carol Ann said.

Each spring, the Auburn University Office of University Scholarships awards scholarships to incoming freshmen for the next school year and general scholarships for current enrolled students. Velda Rooker, director of University scholarships, said there are three levels of Spirit of Auburn Scholarships awarded to incoming freshmen. The first is the SOA Presidential Scholarship, which covers tuition for four years and gives a $1,000 technology stipend for the fall, requires a minimum 32 ACT and 3.5 GPA. The second is the Spirit of Auburn Founders Scholarship requires a minimum 30 ACT and 3.5 GPA and covers tuition for four years. The third is Spirit of Auburn Scholarship requires a minimum 28 ACT, 3.5 GPA and provides $3,000 for four years, according to Rooker.
Rachel Pipan, senior in public relations, recently won the Daniel J. Edelman PRSSA Award, an award the Edelman PR firm awards to outstanding juniors and seniors involved in the Public Relations Student Society of America.

Several changes will be coming to Chewacla State Park, and some have already been put in place. The first change that is already in place is an increase of the entrance fee by one dollar, now making the fee $4 per patron.
