Softball beats Ole Miss for first SEC victory

In the softball team’s first SEC season match, the No. 12 Tigers defeated the Ole Miss Rebels in Oxford, Saturday night, March 14. The on and off rain couldn’t stop the offense, which dominated throughout the game, calling the run rule at 14-3.

Equestrian falls to last regular-season opponent

Equestrian fell to sixth-ranked Texas A&M to close out the regular season Saturday afternoon, March 14, at College Station. With a slow start for the Tigers in fences, Demi Stiegler claimed the first victory for the team, 82-80, after Elizabeth Benson and Jacqueline Shilen fell to the Aggies.

Big Event reaches out to the community

The annual Big Event kicked off this morning with 2,050 volunteers rallied in the Student Center Ballroom before being sent to 200 work sites, according to Michael Waldrum, junior in business and director of the Big Event. Behind the scenes, 165 team members worked to recruit volunteers and job sites among other tasks leading up to the event. “Every year is unique in its own way,” Waldrum said.

SGA to host The Big Event this Saturday

Auburn University's SGA will host The Big Event student-run volunteer day Saturday, March 14, 2015. The Big Event gives college students and faculty the opportunity to thank the community of the City of Auburn for sharing their city with the University student body according to SGA executive director of the Big Event Michael Waldrum, junior in business.

Harrell, defense, push Tigers to quarterfinal

Bruce Pearl’s program turnaround effort is in full force. For the first time since 2000, the Auburn basketball team has won back-to-back games in the SEC Tournament, today’s win a 66-59 comeback victory over the fifth seed Texas A&M. The Tigers came out firing, but found themselves in a 10 point hole at halftime, down 33-23.

Student injured after falling from skateboard

A student fell from his skateboard this morning near the Student Center, according to Captain Lorenza Dorsey of the Auburn Police Division. Officials responded to the scene and the student is being treated for a laceration at East Alabama Medical Center.

Parkway Farmer’s Market moves to bigger location in Opelika

Students and residents of the Auburn-Opelika area will be getting a bigger farmer’s market soon. The Parkway Farmer’s market, currently on Pepperell Parkway has acquired land on the 2300 block of First Avenue in Opelika. According to Marty Ogren, assistant director of planning for the City of Opelika, the new land is 13,000 square feet and rests on three and a half acres. He said they are closing on the property soon.

Magnolia Avenue to close to straighten Oak

The Toomer’s Oaks are settling into their new home, but one may be settling too quickly. Magnolia Avenue between South College and Wright streets will be closed Saturday, March 14, from 8 a.m.-10, according to a press release issued by the City of Auburn. David Dorton, director of public affairs for the City of Auburn, said Auburn will handle closing the streets and provide workers with traffic control. “It was not unexpected that there would be some settling, and there might have to be some repositioning,” Dorton said. Ben Burmester, campus planner with the office of University Architect, said work will begin Friday, March 13, to prepare the tree, and the actual adjustment will be done Saturday. “We just wanted to get in there and adjust the tree,” Burmester said.

Nick Jonas to perform at Auburn Airwaves

Auburn’s University Program’s Council announced Nick Jonas will perform at the 2015 Auburn Airwaves concert on Wednesday, March 11, at approximately 10 a.m. Kesha, Nelly and Nick Jonas will perform at Toomer’s Corner on Saturday, April 18, during the University’s Corner Block Party. Amanda Hurite, UPC president and senior in industrial engineering, said she expects a positive reaction from students. “I think the response is going to be insane,” Hurite said.

After more than 150 years of analysis, the Civil War’s transition into the digital age may be long overdue. Edward Ayers, professor of history and president of the University of Richmond, seeks to change the way we study and access history by transferring the information normally found in hardcopy textbooks into a digital format.

Aasif Mandvi comes to Auburn

UPC hosted Aasif Mandvi, well-known correspondent for “The Daily Show,” at the Foy Auditorium on Monday, March 9. Miranda Marty, senior in political science and director of speakers and comedians committee said they choose Mandvi because he is relevant and they choose speakers or comedians to do a show in Auburn typically based on whether they are well-known. “One of those things where it’s someone who has a recognizable face and a somewhat recognizable name,” Marty said. The process of choosing a comedian to come to Auburn takes careful preparation, according to Marty. “Initially we start off with a list of about three or five people, speakers or comedians, who we’d like to bring to Auburn who we think would attract the biggest crowd for the money and we make initial contact with their middle man who then checks the availability, and their price range,” Marty said. Mandvi read to the audience a couple of stories from his book, “No Land’s Man,” during the show. “The book just talks about his career and I think about his family’s journey and how they immigrated to the United States,” Marty said. During the show, Mandvi answered some questions from the audience. “The fact that we put on a show every day, the fact that there is a show ready to go at 6 p.m.
