Auburn Athletic Director Allen Greene announced Sunday that Gus Malzahn was no longer the head coach after eight seasons. Let’s take a look back at each of Malzahn’s eight seasons at the helm:
After the news of Gus Malzahn's firing, Auburn players past and present took to social media to share their thoughts.
Saturday in Starkville, Mississippi, Auburn's defense finished the night with a total of six sacks, two interceptions, seven pass break-ups and eight tackles for a loss in the 24-10 win. "Being able to come here to Starkville and being able to put up a game like that, play for one another and send them out on the right note, was huge," Hall said.
Despite a slow start on offense Saturday in Starkville, Mississippi, Auburn found a way to win its regular-season finale 24-10 behind the leg of Anders Carlson and the rushing attack from Tank Bigsby.
“I’m hoping that week, that off week, we had before the game got canceled will give us preparation, too," Malzahn said. "I’m hoping it will give us a good footing on everything with our plan. They present challenges, no doubt, they are protective of the football and I think that’s been a big factor.”
“[The Mississippi State defense does] a lot of different things, especially different from last year,” Nix said. “They were a little bit simpler last year, and you knew what you could expect. We had a good game plan for them going in last year. This year obviously, it’s a lot different with a new coaching staff.”
Injured senior linebacker K.J. Britt announced on Thursday via Twitter that he will not be returning this season and instead will turn his attention to the 2021 NFL Draft.
Against No. 5 Texas A&M, Auburn’s offense improved upon its Iron Bowl performance, and Bo Nix used his legs to scramble for two scores. However, in the last 15 minutes of game time, the offense disappeared.
The Auburn defense couldn’t do much to stop the Texas A&M offense on Saturday, allowing 509 yards of total offense, including 313 on the ground. “We couldn’t stop the run and we couldn’t get off the field,” Malzahn said.
Senior Day is set to occur on Saturday for Auburn football as the Tigers take on No. 5 Texas A&M in the 2020 Jordan-Hare Stadium finale. Here are some players from both sides to keep an eye on and keys to victory for each team.
“This senior class is a bunch of special people first of all,” Malzahn said. “They’ve been around here for a long time, and they’re part of our family. It means a lot to try and send those guys out with a victory."
Heading into Saturday's game against Texas A&M, Auburn could be without some of its key contributors because of injuries. Three players are questionable and one was ruled out for Saturday's game.
Auburn has dropped out of the AP Top 25 poll for the second time this season after it suffered a 42-13 loss to No. 1 Alabama.
Auburn may have won the coin toss, but it was one of the few victories for the Tigers in an otherwise one-sided Iron Bowl. The Crimson Tide rolled over Auburn 42-13 in Tuscaloosa on Saturday.
“You gotta be big boys,” Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn said. “You’ve got to take it like a man. We’ve got two games left. This is an unusual season obviously. We’ll need to rebound like we did earlier in the season. It’s a grind, but that’s just part of it."
“The first thing that comes to mind for me is that I’ve got to play big as a player and as a teammate,” Sherwood said. “Everybody just has to be physical. It’s going to be a physical game from both sides. The only way someone can win is by being physical. That’s the first thing that comes to my mind.
“Probably, you play as hard as you’ve played in a game in your entire life, just because of how much it means,” Nix said. “There are a lot of kids going to school on Monday who are going to have to put up with a lot of crap whichever way it goes.”
Alabama head football coach Nick Saban has tested positive for COVID-19, according to a statement released by team physician Dr. Jimmy Robinson and Associate Director of Sports Medicine Jeff Allen. It is reported that he has mild symptoms and will not coach in the Iron Bowl this weekend.
“Well, I mean, I think that's one of the reasons you come to Auburn is to play in the Iron Bowl,” Malzahn said. “And, you know, our guys, they get extremely excited about this game. This is a game that we think about 365 days a year.”
